In this topic you will learn how to carry out a distance vision screen for adults, and children over eight years old using a distance E-chart.

Instruction
For adults, and children over eight years select the distance E-chart on the PEC Screen form.
Explain the vision screen using the distance E-chart.

If a person wears near vision spectacles, should they wear them for the distance vision screen?

Near vision spectacles are for near vision activities like reading. A person does not need to wear them for a distance vision screen.
Instruction
Start with the person’s right eye and top line.
Ask the person to cover their left eye with an occluder (or palm of their left hand), leaving the right eye open to see.

Watch the video of a health worker carrying out a distance vision screen for a person older than eight years.
Record result
Results using the distance E-chart are recorded in the same way as the HOTV chart.
The same number of letters must be matched correctly on the top line and bottom line using the distance E-chart and HOTV chart.
If the person achieves Yes to top and bottom lines, both eyes, check their age:
- Under 40 years skip to the eye health screen
- 40 years or older continue to near vision screen.
If No for either eye:
- Top line skip to the eye health screen and refer to eye health professional urgently
- Bottom line skip to the eye health screen and refer to eye health professional.

- Complete the screen
- Record the result on the PEC Screen form.
