How to make and apply an eye cover

Eye covers

There are two ways to cover an eye:

• Eye pad – a soft cover that lies on top of the eyelids
• Eye shield – a firm cover that does not put any pressure on the eye. An eye shield is used when an eye pad would cause more damage to the eye. Eye shields are useful when the eye is open, swollen, or there is a large object in the eye.

How to make and apply an eye pad

• Cotton wool
• Two pieces of gauze
• Adhesive tape
• Scissors.

Make sure the person is comfortable. Explain:

• You will make a soft cover for their eye
• They should not try to open their eye under the eye pad
• They should not touch or rub their eye.

Make and apply the eye pad

If ready-made eye pads are not available:

1. Place cotton wool between two pieces of gauze
2. Cut the cotton wool and gauze into an oval shape measuring approximately 5 x 6 centimetres
3. Stick a piece of adhesive tape about fifteen centimetres long to the eye pad
4. Ask the person to close both eyes
5. Position the eye pad diagonally over the injured eye and stick the tape to the person’s forehead and cheek
6. Stick a second and third piece of tape to ensure the eye pad lies flat.

How to make and apply an eye shield

التحضير

ستحتاج إلى:

• Adhesive tape
• مقصّ
• Thin cardboard
• Circular object about 8 centimetres wide (for example a cup)
• Pen or pencil.

Make sure the person is comfortable. Explain that you will make a firm cover to protect their eye.

Make and apply the eye shield

If ready-made eye shields are not available:

1. Draw a circle on the cardboard using the circular object and then cut around it
2. Make one cut into the centre about half the width of the circle
3. Make the cardboard into a cone shape
4. Secure the cone shape with adhesive tape
5. Stick one piece of tape to the cone and place it over the person’s eye
6. Add another piece of tape to secure the eye shield over the eye.

Record

Record in the Action taken section of the PEC Screen form by ticking ‘Provided eye pad’ or ‘Provided eye shield’.
