Assessment

Assessment is an important first step in providing hearing aids. Through an assessment you will gather information about the person’s hearing and grade of hearing loss.

Information from the assessment will help you and the person to plan:

  • If they may benefit from hearing aids:
    • What type of hearing aids might be suitable
    • What to teach
    • Suivi
  • Referral to other services.

If the person already has hearing aids and is returning to the service, check whether the hearing aids are meeting their needs. The assessment will help to make decisions about adjusting, repairing or replacing their hearing aids.

Assessment form

The TAP Hearing aids assessment form is a simple tool that supports the selection of the most suitable product.

The form can be used for selecting both preprogrammed and programmable hearing aids. It also has space to write notes and make a plan with the person.

If you haven’t already, download the TAP Hearing aids assessment form and print a copy.

Hearing test equipment

To carry out a hearing test you will need:

  • An audiometer

  • Response button or a signal can be used. For example, a person may raise their hand.

It is important to check hearing test equipment every day before use.

Hearing test equipment should be tested for accuracy every year or after a specified number of tests. This is done by a specialist technician.

Discussion

  • Who will check the hearing test equipment is working every day?
