Preparing to carry out a vision screen
Vision charts
For adults and children over three years old, vision screens are carried out using vision charts.
There are three different vision charts:
- HOTV chart – for children eight years and younger
- Distance E-chart – for children older than eight years, and adults
- Near E-chart – only used for adults 40 years and older.
Instruction
If you haven’t already, download and print the HOTV chart and pointing card, distance E-chart and near E-chart.
Equipment
To carry out a vision screen you will need:
- Correct vision chart – HOTV chart and pointing card, or distance E-chart and near E-chart
- Occluder (optional) – to cover each eye. The palm of a hand can be used instead
- A space which is well lit with no direct sunlight or glare
- Tape measure or a three-metre piece of string to measure the testing distance
- Tape to stick the vision chart on the wall, and to mark the testing distance on the floor
- A chair for the person.
Préparez la salle
- Attach the HOTV or distance E-chart at the correct height on a wall. The chart should be positioned at eye level for the person when they are sitting on the chair.
- Position chair at the correct distance. Measure three metres from the vision chart to the back of the chair.
Conseil
Place tape in front of the front legs of the chair to mark the position. This is in case it is moved accidentally.
