Vision charts

For adults and children over three years old, vision screens are carried out using vision charts.

There are three different vision charts:

• HOTV chart – for children eight years and younger
• Distance E-chart – for children older than eight years, and adults
• Near E-chart – only used for adults 40 years and older.

Equipment

To carry out a vision screen you will need:

• Correct vision chart – HOTV chart and pointing card, or distance E-chart and near E-chart
• Occluder (optional) – to cover each eye. The palm of a hand can be used instead
• A space which is well lit with no direct sunlight or glare
• Tape measure or a three-metre piece of string to measure the testing distance
• Tape to stick the vision chart on the wall, and to mark the testing distance on the floor
• A chair for the person.

• Attach the HOTV or distance E-chart at the correct height on a wall. The chart should be positioned at eye level for the person when they are sitting on the chair.
• Position chair at the correct distance. Measure three metres from the vision chart to the back of the chair.
