Maintenance and repairs

Topic Progress:

It is important to teach maintenance and repairs for both preprogrammed and programmable hearing aids.

Instruksi

Read on to learn about parts which commonly need maintenance or replacement.

Common maintenance problems

Dirt, moisture or ear wax in a hearing aid may cause problems.

  • Remove dirt or moisture:
    • Remove battery and dry with a cloth to remove any moisture
    • Use a cloth or brush to clean the hearing aid and battery compartment.
  • Remove ear wax: Use the wire and brush to remove any blocked ear wax.

Peringatan

Do not use water when cleaning. It may damage the hearing aid.

Common replacement parts

Parts which commonly need to be replaced include:

  • Battery
  • Ear hook
  • Earmould
  • Earmould tube.

Batteries

Disposable batteries usually need replacing every two weeks. It is helpful to have enough spare batteries to last one to two months.

Rechargeable batteries do not need replacing as frequently. It is helpful to have at least one spare rechargeable battery.

Earmould, earmould tube and ear hooks

Check for signs of damage and replace if necessary.

Replace the whole earmould or individual parts by separating the earpiece from the earmould.

Replace earmould tubes or ear hooks if cracked.

  • Avoid twisting the tube when attaching to the earpiece
  • Unscrew ear hook to remove from hearing aid.

Remember Delroy?

Delroy is attending his two year follow up. The health worker cleans his hearing aids and carries out a hearing check with the listening tube. The hearing aids are working well.

The health worker notices the earmould tube is getting hard and is at risk of cracking. The tube is replaced.

Replace hearing aid

Replace hearing aid if it:

  • Has major cracks
  • Has been damaged by water.

If the hearing aid is intermittently working or not working, try problem solving solutions and replace if necessary.

Kiat

If the product is repaired or replaced, it should be fitted and adjusted again to ensure it is suitable for the person.
