Topic Progress:

Eye health refers to the condition of a person’s eyes.

If a person’s eyes are not healthy, it affects how well their eyes can work.

Instruction

Read on to learn what healthy eyes look like.

Parts of the eye

The parts of the eye we can see from the outside include:

  • Eyelids (top and bottom)
  • Eyelashes
  • Pupil (central dark part of the eye)
  • Conjunctiva (white part of the eye)
  • Iris (coloured part of the eye)
  • Cornea (clear layer over the iris and pupil).

Other important parts of the eye include:

  • Lens
  • Retina (back of the eye)
  • Optic nerve.

How we see

  • Light enters through the pupil
  • The light passes through the lens, which focuses it on the retina
  • An image is formed on the retina
  • The image is sent to the brain as electrical signals through the optic nerve
  • When the signals reach the brain, we can see.

To see well, each part of the eye needs to be working properly, and the eyes need to work together.
