Eye health screen
Instruction
In this topic you will learn how to carry out an eye health screen with people of all ages.
Hazırlamaq
You will need:
- A well-lit space with no direct sunlight or glare
- Chair for the person to sit on
- Small torch.
- Always wash and dry your hands (with soap or sanitizer gel) before and after every eye health check
- Avoid touching the person’s eyes.

- You will use a small torch to look at the person’s eyes
- You are checking for any signs of an eye health problem.
Carry out eye health screen
- Use the torch so that you can see the person’s eyes clearly
- Shine the torch across the right eye and left eye. Avoid shining the torch into the person’s eyes for longer than a few seconds directly
- Look for any signs of unhealthy eyes.

You may like to go back to Lesson two: Healthy eyes and common eye health problems to remind yourself what signs of unhealthy eyes look like.
Record results
Record the results on the PEC Screen form.
- If both eyes look healthy select yes, and skip to action taken
- If one or both eyes do not look healthy select no, and record why by selecting the relevant boxes.
Tip
The grey Action column directs you to different Primary eye care guides depending on the person’s eye health problem.
You will learn about the five Primary eye care guides in the Managing vision and eye health problems module.
If a person:
- Has signs of a red eye problem (redness and/or discharge) Guide two: Red eye problems
- Has signs of an external eye problem (crust, swelling, lumps, inward turning eyelashes) Guide three: External eye problems
- Has signs of another eye problem (unclear or milky eye, eyes not looking in the same direction, other symptoms) refer to eye health professional
- Is under three years old with any of the above symptoms Guide four: Children 3 years and under
- Has signs of an eye injury (chemical, burn, knock or cut, foreign body in eye) Guide five: Eye injuries.
It might not be possible to carry out an eye health screen.
For example, it may be difficult to complete the eye health screen with a child that is hard to keep still, or a person that cannot follow your instructions.
If you are unable to complete the eye health screen, record this on the PEC Screen form and continue to action taken, then
refer to an eye health professional.Instruction
