How to remove a foreign body

In this lesson you will learn how to remove a foreign body from a person’s eye.
Foreign bodies in the eye
Foreign bodies can range from a small particle like a seed or glass shard, to large objects piercing the eye.
Peringatan
Remember you should only try to remove foreign bodies that:
- You can see on the surface of the eye
- Do NOT pierce the eye
- Are NOT on the coloured part of the eye.
If you cannot see the foreign body, or it pierces the eye, or it is on the coloured part of the eye do not try to remove it.

How to remove a foreign body
Persiapan

- Cotton buds or a clean cloth
- Saline or cooled boiled water.
Make sure your hands are clean or wear clean gloves.

Make sure the person is comfortable. Explain:
- You will remove the foreign body with a cotton bud/clean cloth
- They may feel a small increase in discomfort, but it is important to try to keep still
- They should feel relief as soon as the foreign body is removed.
Remove the foreign body
- Wet cotton buds with the saline solution or cooled boiled water
- Look closely at the person’s eye. If you cannot see the foreign body, turn the eyelid outward to check if there is anything on the inside of the eyelid
- Using the wet cotton bud, remove the foreign body with a gentle upward movement
- Show the foreign body to the person, this will reassure them that it has been removed.

If you cannot remove the foreign body gently with a cotton bud, cover the eye and refer the person to an eye health professional urgently.
