Find a quiet, private space to sit with the person. Use the questions on the assessment form as a prompt, to learn about their:
- Health problems
- Abilities and activity level
- Whether they wear a lower limb prosthesis or orthosis
- Whether they are likely to use their walking aid in challenging environments
- What shoes they usually wear
- Whether they have a walking aid already and if so, whether it is meeting their needs
Always explain to the person why these questions are helpful in choosing the right walking aid. Involve family members and/or carers when appropriate.
The following topics will explain more about the assessment questions and how answers to these questions can affect the selection of the right walking aid.
