Check hearing aid is working
Before programming a hearing aid, check the hearing aid:
- Has no sign of damage
- Is working.

The steps for checking a hearing aid is working are the same for preprogrammed and programmable hearing aids.
Remember to start with the hearing aid volume turned down and gradually increase to a comfortable level to avoid hurting your ears.

Organize the ‘check a hearing aid is working’ steps in the correct order by numbering them 1-4.
Correct order:
- Insert hearing aid battery and turn on the hearing aid
- Connect the listening tube to the ear hook of the hearing aid and insert the earpiece of the tube in your ear
- Perform the six Ling sounds with a normal speaking voice with hearing aid 30 centimetres away from your mouth
- Check volume switch is working by making small adjustments while performing Ling sounds.
Programming programmable hearing aids
A programmable hearing aid can be programmed by connecting the hearing aid to a phone, tablet or computer loaded with the hearing aid program or app.
The hearing aid program will adjust the loudness of individual sounds to match the results of a person’s hearing test.

If the hearing aid has not connected to the computer, make sure it is turned on!
Before starting:
- Check the hearing aid app is already downloaded on your device
- Make sure the hearing aid is connected. Connection may be signalled by a sound or a prompt on screen.
To start programming:
- Create a record in the app.
- Select audiogram.
- Enter the hearing test (audiogram) result.
- Select detect hearing aid (check if the hearing aid serial number can be seen).
- Find the fitting symbol. Select first time user.
- Select the type of standard earmould that you are going to use.
- Select prescriptive formula. The prescriptive formula will be on a default setting. It is recommended to use the default setting. Press ‘first fit’.
- Save and close application once programming is done. Only disconnect the hearing aid, after this step is complete.

Some software will suggest what type of earmould is best given the hearing loss. Select the type of earmould locally available.
Selecting the prescriptive formula will automatically calculate the most suitable hearing aid settings for the person from the information provided.
