Self care
Cleaning and looking after a toilet or shower chair
Teach the person, and their caregiver or family where appropriate, how to take care of their toilet or shower chair. This will help the chair to remain in good condition and last as long as possible.
How to clean a toilet or shower chair:
- The removable bucket of a toilet chair should be emptied and cleaned with soap after each use.
- Shower and toilet chairs should be cleaned regularly with a gentle cleaning product. Go step by step. Removable parts should be removed for cleaning and then replaced. Don’t forget the underside, particularly the seat.
- Store the chair in a dry location.
Never leave a toilet or shower chair outside in the rain!
As well as cleaning the toilet or shower chair, it is important to regularly check for any signs of:
- Rust
- Cracks in the frame
- Loose screws
- Loose brakes
- Cracks or tears on the seat
- Cracks in the removable bucket.
Read more about what to do if any of these signs are found during follow up.
