Checking hearing aids before fitting is important for both preprogrammed and programmable hearing aids.

Before fitting the hearing aid, check the hearing aid:

  • Has no sign of damage
  • Is working.

Check the hearing aid:

  • Has no damage or cracks
  • Battery compartment has no sign of damage or moisture.

Check hearing aid is working

The Ling sounds are used by a health worker to check a hearing aid is working properly. The sounds used are “ah”, “ee”, “oo”, “mm”, “sh”, and “ss”.

All six Ling sounds should be clear when checking the hearing aid with a listening tube.

Instruction

Listen to the six Ling sounds.

Check hearing aid with a listening tube

Prepare:

  • Insert hearing aid battery in the battery door
  • Turn on the hearing aid
  • Start with the volume turned down
  • Connect the listening tube to the ear hook of the hearing aid
  • Insert the earpiece of the listening tube in your ear
  • Gradually increase volume until the sound level is comfortable.

Check hearing aid:

  • Hold the hearing aid 30 centimetres away from your mouth
  • Perform the six Ling sounds with a normal speaking voice: “aa” “ee” “oo” “ss” “sh” “mm”
  • Check volume switch is working by making small adjustments while performing Ling sounds.

If you can hear all six Ling sounds clearly with no feedback (whistling) the hearing aid is working properly.

If you cannot hear all six Ling sounds clearly, return the hearing aid to the supplier and get another hearing aid.

Organize the hearing check steps in the correct order by numbering them 1 to 4.

Correct order:

  1. Check for damage
  2. Insert battery
  3. Connect listening tube
  4. Ling sounds check

Tip

It is important for the person checking the hearing aid to have normal hearing.

Activity

Gather a hearing aid, battery, listening tube and list of Ling sounds.

Take turns to test the hearing aid. Check:

  • Could you hear all six Ling sounds?
  • Were the sounds clear with no feedback (whistling)?
