Instruction

In this topic you will learn how to carry out an eye health screen.

Washing hands under running water with soap.

Prepare

  • Always wash and dry your hands (with soap or sanitizer gel) before and after every eye health screen
  • Avoid touching the person’s eyes
  • Remind the child that you will be looking into their eyes with a torch.

Eye health screen

  • Bend down and look in the child’s eyes using the torch, so that you can see their eyes more clearly
  • Shine the torch across the right eye and left eye. Avoid shining the torch into the child’s eyes for longer than a few seconds
  • Record the results on the Screen form.

Results:

  • If both eyes look healthy select Yes
  • If one or both eyes do not look healthy select No and record the reason why.

Both eyes must be healthy to record a Pass result. If one or more eyes are not healthy Refer.

Activity

In groups practice doing an eye screen on each other, using a torch. Check for:

  • Crust or pus on eyelids/eyelashes
  • Red colour on white of the eye
  • Discharge
  • Coloured part of eye unclear/milk coloured
  • Eyes not looking in the same direction.

You may want to go back to Lesson two to remind yourself of the signs of unhealthy eyes.

It might not be possible to carry out a vision/eye health screen on a child.

Sometimes you might start the screening, but not be able to finish it. If it is not possible to carry out any part of the screen,  Refer the child to eye care personnel.
