Teaching how to look after absorbent products

Topic Progress:

Absorbent products work better and last longer if they are taken care of correctly.

This includes:

  • Washing and drying for washable products
  • Dry storage for single use products.

Let the person know who they can contact for replacement supplies or if they are experiencing leaks while using their absorbent product.

Preparing washable products

The absorbent layer of all washable products needs to be washed at least once before used for the first time.

These products become more absorbent after a number of washes.

An automatic washing machine with closed front lid.

Washing and drying washable products

Keeping washable products in cold water while waiting to wash them helps reduce stains.

Do not leave in the bucket for longer than 24 hours.

Wash with a mild soap. Do not use cleaning products that contain bleach or fabric conditioners when washing.

After washing, make sure the products are completely dry before storing and/or using.

Zora hangs out her absorbent products on a clothes line with her washing. She puts a thin cloth over the products to cover them from view.

Dry storage for single use products

Single use products start to absorb moisture from the environment as soon as the packet they are in is opened. For this reason:

  • Avoid opening packs until they are ready to be used
  • Close packs after taking each product out.
