Always teach a person how to use their transfer board. Explain to the person the safest way to use a transfer board, demonstrate how it may be used and let them practice.
More information on supporting people who have difficulties with transfers can be found in the WHO Basic Rehabilitation Package Clinical Resource.
Transferring from a wheelchair
Explain to the person how to transfer safely from a wheelchair using a transfer board:
- Always put the brakes on your wheelchair first
- Lift your buttocks to avoid bumping or dragging skin
- Protect skin by wearing clothes that cover the bottom part of your body.
Reflection
Can you think of some other ways to help make transfers safe?
- Encourage the person to take their time, moving along the board in small lifts
- Position the wheelchair as close as possible to the surface they are transferring to
- Coordinate with the person assisting you, such as by counting “1,2,3″.
Encourage the person to use whatever physical ability they have. This may be:
- Using their legs
- Pushing through their hands only
- Using only one hand or one leg.
