There are other assistive products that can help a person move from one surface to another.

These products are not included in TAP because more training is needed to provide them.

This module does not provide guidance on how to provide:

  • Transfer belts
  • Hoists
  • Transfer sheets for a person who is lying down.

Transfer belts

Transfer belts are attached around a person’s waist and provide handles for caregivers to hold while supporting a person transferring.

Most belts are made with strong, soft fabric or cushioned materials.

A wide fabric belt with loops is fastened by an adjustable strap and buckle around a person’s waist.

Hoist

A hoist is a machine that lifts a person up using a sling. The sling is placed around the person’s body and attached to the hoist.

They are used when the person needs a high level of assistance.

A large metal frame with hooks to attach a sling.

Transfer sheet for a person who is lying down

Transfer sheets are two layers of material which slide easily against each other. They assist movement of a person without dragging their skin.

Transfer sheets are used by caregivers to assist a person to change position in a bed or move from one surface to another without lifting.

A person who is lying down is being transferred from a bed to a hospital trolley. Three people are assisting in transferring him using two slide sheets. Two caregivers pull the top layer of sheet while the other caregiver supports the person's shoulder and hip, moving them across the bed.
