Instruction
In this topic you will learn how to teach people to use different types of magnifiers.
Handheld magnifier
- Hold the object (such as a newspaper) at a comfortable distance, or place on a table.
- Hold magnifier over the object and slowly move towards eyes. Keep going until the image is clearest. Try to keep the magnifier as close as possible to this position.
- If reading, slowly move the magnifier in the direction of reading. Try to keep the same distance between the page and the magnifier.
- At the end of the line move back across the same line to the beginning, then move down one line and start again. Use finger as a guide to help locate the next line if needed.

Stand magnifier
- Place the magnifier over the object.
- Move head as close to the magnifier as needed to get a clear picture, and the widest field of view.
- Find a position that is comfortable to carry out the task. Take regular breaks to limit fatigue.

Around the neck magnifier or sheet magnifier with adjustable stand
- Once the magnifier is adjusted to correct height (Learn more in Lesson three – Fit), place the object under the magnifier.
- Move head as close to the magnifier as needed to get a clear picture, and the widest field of view.
- Find a position that is comfortable to carry out the task. Take regular breaks to limit fatigue.

Dome magnifier (or small stand magnifier)
- Place the dome or stand magnifier flat on the page.
- Move head as close to the magnifier as needed to get a clear view.
- Move magnifier slowly in the direction of reading, keeping it flat on the page.
- At the end of the line move back across the same line to the beginning, then move down one line and start again.

Activity
- Practice using each type of magnifier that you have available.
- Choose one and teach a friend or colleague how to use it.
