After selecting a magnifier or telescope, it is important to teach the person how to use it.
General points to remember:
- The field of view (area that can be seen) through a magnifier or telescope is small. It will take practise to be able to use the product easily.
- Encourage the person to practise for short periods initially as they may get tired quickly.
- If the person uses near vision or prescription spectacles, they should wear them when using their magnifier or telescope.

Positioning
- When using handheld or stand magnifiers for reading, consider using a reading stand if available. This will bring the reading material closer, which will help the person maintain a comfortable posture.

Lighting
Remember that good light is very important.
Talk with the person about where they will be using their magnifier or telescope, and help them to make the best use of light when using their product.
Tip
Tips for making the most of natural light include:
- When indoors, sit beside a window or door to best use natural light.
- Aim for the light to be coming from behind and to one side.
- Do not face into the light.
- Use pale coloured curtains and wall colours to improve light in a room.
- Use good electric lights where possible.
- If outdoors, avoid being directly in the sun as this can cause glare. Shade eyes using a sunhat.
Tips for making the best use of a lamp:
- Position the lamp so that light shines on the task from behind and slightly to the side.
