How to look after hearing aids

A hearing aid will last longer and will be safer if it is looked after.

To prevent damage, it is important that you take care of your hearing aids. This includes:

1. Cleaning
2. Avoiding water damage
3. Storing safely.

A hearing aid may last 3-5 years if looked after well.

Let the child’s caregiver know who they can contact if they need spare parts.

Earpiece of earmould is correct!

The earpiece of the earmould is the only part which can be cleaned in water. Remove the earpiece from the tube before cleaning.

Activity

Prepare a hearing aid cleaning kit:

  • Cloth
  • Brush
  • Wire
  • Bowl with soapy water and paper towel.

Practice cleaning each part of a hearing aid correctly.

Avoiding water damage

Water may damage hearing aids. Protect hearing aids from getting wet.

Storing safely

Teach the child and their caregiver how to safely:

  • Store the hearing aid at night
  • Protect during transport.
