Plan follow up actions

Lesson: 5 of 6
Topic: 2 of 2
0% Complete

Use the information collected to decide with the person whether:

  • A different type or power of magnifier or telescope is needed. If so, can you provide it or does the person need to be referred to an eye health professional?
  • The current product needs replacing.
  • Further training is needed.
  • Referral to another service is needed.

Remember Joanna?

Joanna uses a stand magnifier to help her read the newspaper. During a follow up visit, Joanna tells you that the magnifier is not strong enough as she cannot see the newsprint clearly.

Question

What should you check during your follow up with Joanna to find out more information?

  • Ask Joanna to show you how she is using the magnifier.
  • Check the condition of the magnifier to see if it is broken or scratched.
  • Check that the height of the magnifier is still appropriate.

After checking Joanna’s magnifier you see that it is in good working order.

When you ask Joanna to show you how she uses the magnifier, you see that she is not wearing her prescription spectacles when using it.

Question

What actions could you take?

  • Educate Joanna about the importance of using her prescription spectacles when she is using her magnifier.
  • Once Joanna has her spectacles on, check that she positions her head at an appropriate distance from the magnifier.
  • If the magnifier is still not meeting Joanna’s needs, you could trial a higher power magnifier or refer her to an eye health professional.

You have completed Lesson five!
