Inward turning eyelashes

Eyelashes that turn inwards irritate the eye. It is important to remove them.

Prepare

You will need:

  • Clean gloves
  • Sterile tweezers.

Always wash and dry your hands with soap or sanitizer gel before and after removing inward turning eyelashes.

Explain

Explain that you will gently remove the eyelashes that are turning inward, to stop them touching the eyeball.

Remove eyelashes

  1. Ask person to sit or lie down comfortably
  2. Tell them to keep their head tilted back or pressed back into the bed, and not turn their head from side to side
  3. Ensure your hands are clean, or wear clean gloves
  4. Find the eyelash(es) that are turned inward
  5. Use the tweezers to hold the eyelash at the bottom to prevent breakage
  6. Pull out the entire eyelash ensuring the root is intact.
  7. If you are unable to remove the inward turning eyelashes refer the person to an eye health professional.
