Prepare and fit the walking aid

Walking aids should be fitted for each person. This includes:

  • Adjusting the height
  • Adjusting the elbow cuff (for some elbow crutches)
  • Adjusting the width (for some walking frames, rollators and posterior walkers)

Correct fit is important to make the walking aid easier to use and reduce the risk of injuries or falls.

Before adjusting the walking aid, ask the person to stand next to a hand rail, table or stable chair, to give them something to hold onto.

They should have:

  • Their shoulders relaxed
  • Their arms at their side and a slight bend in their elbow
  • Their shoes on
