The first step in assessing if a person may need near vision spectacles is to complete the TAP vision screen (or a similar vision screen). How to carry out this screen is covered in the TAP Vision assistive products module.

Using the TAP vision screen you can identify whether a person who has a vision problem:

  • Needs a referral to an eye health professional or medical doctor
  • May benefit from prescription spectacles (not covered in TAP)
  • May benefit from vision assistive products that can be provided at community level (such as near vision spectacles).

Resources you will need

  • Near vision spectacles in a range between +1.00 to +3.00
  • Tools and spare parts for basic near vision spectacles maintenance and repairs:
    • Mini screwdrivers which match the screws in the near vision spectacles you are providing
    • Magnifier (to help see small screws)
    • Spare parts for the near vision spectacles you are providing, including screws and nose pads

  • Make sure the letters are printed in dark black to make it clearer.
