Teaching how to look after bladder, bowel and skin

Topic Progress:

People who experience leaks benefit from simple health advice to avoid urine infections, constipation and skin damage.

Simple health advice is included in the TAP Absorbent products assessment form.

If you are unable to download and print the form, don’t worry. The advice is clearly shown as you go through this section of the module.

Advice for avoiding urine infections

Urine infections are common. There are some simple steps that can help avoid them. If you suspect a person may have a urine infection always refer them to a health professional. You can also encourage them to:

  • Drink more water
  • Avoid drinking alcohol, tea, coffee and fizzy drinks (e.g. coke or lemonade).

კითხვა

1.How many glasses of water should a person with signs of a urine infection drink each day?

c) 10-12 glasses (about 3 litres) is correct.

It is important to drink more water than usual if you have signs of a urine infection. Water dilutes the urine and germs (bacteria) and reduces irritation to the bladder.

2. It is not necessary for all the drinks to be water. Which of the following would you suggest?
(Select all that apply)

a) and e) are correct. Soup and fruit juice are examples of foods and drinks that are other sources of liquid which do not irritate the bladder.

b), c) d) and f) are all examples of liquids that are not helpful if someone has a urine infection.

Alcohol, tea, coffee and fizzy drinks irritate the bladder, making it empty more often. This makes the urine concentrated (dark colour) and encourages bacteria to grow.

Advice for avoiding constipation

Constipation is uncomfortable and can be a cause of incontinence. Simple advice on avoiding constipation can help.

Sign of constipation section of the form.

Eating stimulates the bowels. The bowels are more likely to empty after eating a meal. This is a good time to try going to the toilet.

Squatting or sitting on the toilet with knees higher than hips, also help the bowels to empty more easily. If you do not have a squat toilet, try keeping a small step in the bathroom.

კითხვა

1. You are less likely to be constipated if you drink water regularly.

True is correct.  Water keeps the stool (poo) soft, making it easier to move through your bowel and pass out of your body.

2. Why do foods with fibre like fruit, vegetables, nuts, beans and lentils help avoid constipation?

These foods help keep the stool softer and more bulky so it moves through the bowel more easily.

Simple advice for skin protection

Skin damage can happen quickly for people who experience incontinence.

Simple advice on how to protect the skin can help.

Always advise people to check their skin every day for signs of a rash or pressure wounds.

Signs of rash and pressure wound section of the form.

Caring for skin:

  • Wash skin with water after leaks of urine
  • Wash skin with gentle soap and water after leaks of stool. Rinse off soap
  • Wash gently and pat skin dry. Do not rub as this can damage skin
  • Apply a thin layer of barrier cream to add protection to the skin. Powder is not an effective skin protection.

კითხვა

How quickly should a person clean the skin after experiencing a leak of stool?

c) A person should find a private place immediately.

Quick changing of products used and cleaning of the area that has been in contact will help avoid skin damage.
