Self care assistive products to prevent pressure wounds
A pressure wound is a breakdown of skin caused by pressure. It is usually over a bony area and is a common problem for people who have problems with feeling (sensation) or difficulty moving and changing position.
Pressure wounds are a common problem for people who have reduced feeling or movement, and who use a wheelchair or spend long periods lying down.
Different self care assistive products can be used to prevent pressure wounds.
People who use wheelchairs and are at risk of a pressure wound should always use a pressure relief cushion prescribed for them in their wheelchair.
People who are at risk of developing a pressure wound should also use a pressure relief mattress prescribed for them in their bed.
