Some of the key words used in this module are explained below. You can print these to use as you work through the module.

Audioshoe – A removable small part which connects a receiver to the bottom of a behind-the-ear hearing aid.

An attachment with outer casing. The inner casing has a battery shaped holder inside with two pin holes at the top.

Behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid – A type of hearing aid that is positioned behind a person’s ear.

A behind-the-ear hearing aid with built in receiver, earmould and earmould tube.

A behind-the-ear hearing aid sits behind the ear, with the earmould tube hooking over the pinna to sit in the opening of the ear canal.

Bluetooth ®  – A method of wirelessly connecting a hearing aid to a personal remote microphone system within a range of 10 metres.

Digital Modulation (DM) – A way to transmit sound using digital signals.

Direct Audio Input (DAI) –  A type of receiver that attaches on some hearing aids. It may connect through an audioshoe or directly to the hearing aid.

Ear and hearing professional – Professionals that test, manage, and treat ear and hearing problems.

Frequency Modulation (FM) – A way to transmit sound through radio frequencies using analogue (non-digital) signals.

Microphone transmitter – A part of a personal remote microphone system that captures the sound of a person speaking and sends it to the hearing aid of the listener.

Pairing – Setting up a link between a hearing aid and personal remote microphone system to allow them to communicate.

Receiver – A part of a hearing aid that receives the transmitted sound and sends it to the person’s ear.
