Programmable hearing aids

This module builds on the TAP Preprogrammed hearing aids module and includes additional information on how to provide hearing aids for children. It teaches primary health care and community workers to provide programmable hearing aids following four service steps.

Module duration: 2 hours online, followed by supervised practice.

Hearing aid fitting for children is often more demanding compared to adults. It requires a higher level of training.

Before you start, check that you have completed these modules:

Resources you will need

Hearing test:

  • Audiometer and noise cancelling headphones
  • Quiet room
  • Selection of programmable hearing aids, including different sizes of earmoulds and spare batteries
  • Toys to encourage younger children to participate or stickers for completing the test

Hearing aid fitting:

  • Earmoulds in different sizes
  • Spare earmould tube
  • Scissors
  • Pen

Ling sounds:

  • Ling sounds pointing card
  • Card (20 centimetres x 20 centimetres) to cover tester’s mouth during Ling sounds test

Hearing aid checks/care:

  • Listening tube (stetoclip)
  • Cleaning kit including brush, wire, cloth, container for soapy water, paper towel
  • Hearing aid storage (dehumidifier container)
